ByLine magazine includes one page of market info, although not specific to just children's writers. ByLine is a reasonable market for breaking in with articles about writing. Guidelines at www.bylinemag.com/guidelines.asp.

 

Children's Book Council: The CBC Member List is updated twice a month. It has publisher contact and submission information, as well as links to publisher web sites. CBC also includes some interesting childrens' book reading lists.

 

Children's Book Insider a monthly print publication that includes some market information.

 

Children's Writer is a monthly print publication that includes at least 2 pages of magazine and book market information.

 

Fandangle Magazine is an ezine for kids ages 6-10. Non-paying market. Sponsors a virtual book fair in November.

 

The annual Children's Writer's and Illustrator's Market that comes out each fall is a dedicated to market information.

 

Children's author Robin Friedman has a site that includes 20+ interviews with children's book editors under the "Interviews" section.

 

Check out FreelanceWriting.com for their guidelines database (not specific to children's writing).

 

Editor-specific needs for Highlights magazine are listed here.

 

Jacket Flap includes publishing information for 10,000 publishers – description of publisher, web site link, reading levels, and some book titles published. Good starting point, though further research may be required (for example, some of the listings may feature self-publishing.)

  

Kids Magazine Writers: The focus of this site is writing for children's magazines, but many of the articles (such as "How to Prepare for Your One on One Critique") apply to other types of children's writing. Includes an excellent magazine market guide, and an "Editors Speak" section that provides insight into what different magazine editors need.

 

Web site from book marketing author John Kremer has a section on Book Editors and Book Publishers for Children's and Parenting Books, which features links to publisher web sites. Verify editor names before submitting.

 

Children's author Cynthea Liu has a web site that includes an alphabetical list of editors, and links to editor interviews or related articles.

 

In the "My Books" section of JoAnn Macken's sitecheck the right side of the page for list of links to web sites for kids' NF publishers (educational publishers, test publishers, job listings).

The SCBWI compiles an annual "Publishers of Books for Young People" each August and includes market updates in their bimonthly newsletter.

Smartwriters is "dedicated to providing professional children's writers information about the business of writing, and providing tools that will help you do your jobs better, including a directory of children's book publishers and paying magazine markets." Also provides an online newsletter, called Smartwriters Journal, and offers a yearly contest.

Vista updates "publishing industry moves" on a weekly basis.

 

Writer's Digest: Includes some articles and a writing prompt online.

 

The Writer's Place Guidelines: Searchable database of paying markets. (For children's publications, look under "Kids & Family.")

 

Writers Weekly: Although many of the markets listed are not children-related, you can search their database of paying markets and freelance jobs using "children" as a criteria. New markets are added weekly. You can also subscribe to their free newsletter through www.WritersWeekly.com. In addition, publisher Angela Hoy also created an interesting "Whispers and Warnings" section to inform writers of potential problems with publishers.
